The tote bag has become the default promotional item, and for good reason. It is inexpensive to produce, genuinely useful, and carried in public for years rather than discarded after an event.
What makes tote bags effective
The flat front panel gives a large, uninterrupted print area — enough for a logo, a message and a web address without crowding. Nothing else in the promotional catalogue offers that much readable surface at the same price.
The shift away from single-use plastic has helped too. A reusable bag is now something people actively want rather than politely accept, which changes how long it stays in use.
Material choices
Canvas
The standard. Strong, holds its shape, prints cleanly and lasts for years of regular use.
Blacu
A lighter, unbleached cotton with a natural finish. Cheaper than canvas and popular for events with an environmental theme.
Spunbond
The most economical option for very large distributions, though it will not last as long as woven cotton.
Drill and twill
Heavier weaves for totes intended as merchandise rather than giveaways.
Design considerations
Two things determine whether a tote is used or abandoned: handle length and base construction. Handles that are too short to go over a shoulder halve the bag's usefulness, and a tote with no gusset cannot hold anything bulky. Both cost very little to get right at the specification stage and are impossible to fix afterwards.
Printing options include screen printing for simple designs, DTF printing for full-colour artwork, and embroidery where a more premium finish is wanted.
