A pataka is a flag carrying deep symbolic meaning, used to represent an organisation, an institution or a particular group. It is normally designed around an official emblem, embroidered in gold thread and finished with fringing along the edges.
Where pataka flags are used in Indonesia
- Regional government bodies carrying their own distinctive emblem.
- Military and police organisations with formal unit symbols.
- Schools and universities using a pataka for ceremonies and processions.
- Religious organisations, for ritual and ceremonial purposes.

Embroidered velvet pataka with fringed edging
The classic specification, and the one most institutions request.
Why velvet
Velvet has the depth of colour and the weight that a ceremonial flag needs. It hangs properly on a pole rather than fluttering, and gold thread reads sharply against its pile.
Typical specification
Velvet ground fabric, gold or silver thread embroidery of the official emblem, fringed edging on three sides, and a wooden or metal pole with a finial. Sizes and colours follow the standards set by your institution.
Looking after a velvet pataka
Store the flag rolled rather than folded to avoid creasing the pile, keep it out of direct sunlight, and use a protective cover between ceremonies. Do not machine wash — spot clean only, and let it dry flat away from heat.
